Innovative solutions improve air quality and comfort in cars
Maximize productivity by reducing defects
BASF increases production capacity of low-volatile polyols by 13,000 tons to meet growing market demand for low-VOC solutions
The Ulsan plant of XX Automotive (HMC) will exclusively use BASF's Elastoflex® flexible foam polyurethane system (PU) to produce automotive seats. This highly elastic polyurethane foam is a low-volatile organic compound (VOC) solution primarily used in automotive applications such as seats and headrests. Compared to traditional foams, BASF Elastoflex® offers better comfort, flexibility and load-bearing properties.
Andy Postlethwaite, senior vice president of Asia Pacific for BASF's Performance Materials division, said: "The primary goals of automotive OEMs are to reduce VOC emissions and improve driving comfort. BASF focuses on improving Elastoflex® solutions to meet rapidly changing markets Trends and needs, while maintaining the superior mechanical properties of the materials, guaranteeing outstanding performance and flexible design. "
To meet the most stringent emission control regulations, BASF has optimized its polyol production process to produce Elastoflex® flexible polyurethane foam for high comfort seats. With optimized production processes, BASF can produce specialty polyols with low cost and low VOC emissions.
The test results of SGS Korea, the world's leading testing agency, show that the new solution reduces acetaldehyde and formaldehyde emissions by more than 30%, which helps to improve air quality in cars and improve the health of car drivers. The field tests also show that the newly developed polyurethane system has good fluidity, thus increasing production line productivity and reducing product defect rates.
Bao Leiwei added: "To meet the growing demand for low-VOC solutions in various industries and applications, BASF has also expanded its polyol production capacity in Ulsan by 13,000 tons. The increase in polyol production capacity is for XX Motor Company and our Other important customers overseas have provided a stable product supply. "
Brian Seo, BASF ’s Korea Transportation and Industrial Business Management Department, said: "We are very pleased to work with long-term partner XX Automotive to explore innovative low-VOC solutions for the automotive industry. This cooperation is based on our technical expertise and materials innovation. It is another successful example of cooperation between the two sides. "
In addition, XX Automobile Group, which has more than 80% of the Korean automobile market, is also developing the application of the material to automobile roofs and steering wheels.
