The collapsible pot mat Krempel® from the German company oha-design is a simple and ingenious small household item that combines fun, design and practicality with engineering plastics. The kitchen item consists of four flexible flat plastic strips which are connected to each other by rivets. By pushing and pulling the plastic strip, it can be changed from the original flat shape to the inversion or in many other ways to form a stable three-dimensional shape, such as a circular shape, a pincushion shape or a fish shape. By using the high-performance plastic Ultrason® P (polyphenyl sulfone), oha-design produces high-load plastic strips. Among them, the polyphenylsulfone material from BASF ensures that the pan is always non-deformable, flame retardant and easy to clean in the dishwasher.
To ensure that the lightweight Krempel is more durable on a flat, foldable basis, the materials used must match: in addition to Ultrason P, the product also features stainless steel rivets and silicone discs to ensure slip resistance. Thanks to the use of polyphenylsulfone, the pot has good high temperature resistance, flexibility and recovery, as well as high notched impact strength and high chemical resistance. In addition to home, this versatile product is also suitable for catering services and camping. Also widely used is Krempel's Ultrason P, a material that is resistant to high temperatures (up to 220 ° C), tough and shatterproof, lightweight and flexible, resistant to oils and detergents, making it suitable for durable and safe components of household appliances, such as Refrigerators, ovens, air fryers, food blenders, coffee machines and juicers are also available for dining and microwave ovens. Ultrason P can be in direct contact with food or processed into transparent or opaque parts such as refrigerator drawers or display covers.
Ore-design's head, Krempel's inventor Andreas Anetseder, said: "The development of Krempel took me a whole year and a half. During the period, I tried using wood or metal, but eventually chose plastic. Go to Krempel I have learned a lot about plastics in mass production. Even if you design a simple object, you must ensure that the various aspects work together seamlessly: material properties and thickness, diameter of discs and rivets, and precise injection molding process. Only in this way can it be magically curved into different shapes like magic."
The success of this product also benefited from the name Krempel, which was awarded the 2017 German Design Award. Anetseder said: "It is a bit ironic to say that the name Krempel is not only derived from the German verb 'krempeln', meaning 'folding' or 'rolling up', but also derived from the noun 'Krempel', meaning useless household items or things. I hope that Krempel will not be defined by everyone as something that is useless. Even if you are not using it in the kitchen, it is not bad to use it as a small thing to play everyday."
The flexible and interesting Krempel also has a function: it can be used to support all pans of different shapes and sizes from 13 to 28 cm in diameter. In addition, Krempel's flat starting shape allows it to be easily placed in a traditional drawer or simply hung on a wall.
Ultrason is the trade name for the BASF polyethersulfone (Ultrason E), polysulfone (Ultrason S) and polyphenylsulfone (Ultrason P) product lines. This high-performance material can be used to manufacture lightweight components in the electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries, as well as in the manufacture of water purification membranes and related components in contact with hot water and food. The Ultrason brand excels in thermosetting materials, metals and ceramics.
